20th Century Dog / Danaides

The Jazzified Afro and Broke Beat Funk of ‘The Dog’ meets the banging beats, triggered drums and wild guitars of ‘Danaîdes’ (aka The Alcohotlicks)
Both have made there mark performing cutting edge music for over a decade here in Sydney. Both were significant in forming the signature sound of the Jazzgroove label at a time.
‘The Dog’ has taken the cross genre ball and run with it since band leader and bassist Cameron Undy started the group last century. Drawing from Jazz, Afro-Beat and 20th Century classical music with influences as wide ranging as Miles Davis, Fela-Kuti, Bela Bartok, Ornette Coleman, Gyorgy Ligeti and Thomas Mapfumo.
Grooves of all flavours, and rhythm games running through the music like pulsing veins. Funk, Afro-beat, jazz: all booty-shaking but mind-bending at the same time. – John Hardaker
Live there is something even more expansive and energetic about this band. The rare blend of odd time danceable grooves and singable melodies is infectious.
